I have recently become obsessed with Project Runway’s past season contestant Michael Costello. Although he did not come in first place he is definitely becoming first place in the fashion design world. His designs have been spotted on the red carpet on many celebrities including Adrienne Bailon, Rocsi Diaz, and queen B herself Beyoncé. I truly admire this 29 year old father of two, because his talent is completely natural. Not many are born with the ability to drape and sew successfully, most have to take classes on perfecting these techniques. Costello designed is first couture collection at age 14 and opened his own boutique in Palm Springs CA, at the age of 15. At 16 Michael began designing for Clare’s Collection a line famous for pageant gowns and red carpet looks and since then he has nurtured his ability to create and taken his career to new heights. I love his gowns simply for their beauty as well as intricate patterns. Costello does a magnificent job at accentuating a woman’s figure something that some designers work to hide. His gowns not only show off curves, but add curves to women who don’t have that hourglass figure naturally. His designs remind me a lot of Madame Gres a French couture designer from the 1930’s and 40’s. She was well known for designing breath taking Grecian style gowns and signature cut out designs to expose skin where appropriate. It is amazing to see where designers may have gotten their inspiration from and flip that inspiration into their own star studded creation. With unbelievable attention to detail and drapery, I believe his designs are made to make women not only feel beautiful and elegant but confident and sexy. I appreciate his work and overall passion for what he does and cannot wait to see what future looks he will surely come up with.
